Indian Para-Taekwondo Player Aruna Tanwar Secures Berth in 2024 Paralympic Games

Mumbai: Aruna Tanwar, India’s para-taekwondo sensation, marked a historic achievement on Sunday by clinching a gold medal in the women’s 47 kg category at the Asian Para-Taekwondo Qualifying Tournament held in Tai’an, China. With this remarkable feat, Aruna secured her place in the 2024 Paralympic Games set to be held in Paris.

The Sports Authority of India announced Aruna’s qualification through a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. This accomplishment adds another milestone to Aruna’s illustrious career, making her the first Indian para-taekwondo player to qualify and participate in consecutive Paralympic Games.

Having previously represented India at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, where she clinched the bronze medal in the Hangzhou 2022 event, Aruna is now set to embark on her second Paralympic journey in Paris. Her consistent performances and dedication have propelled her to the forefront of Indian para-sports, inspiring countless individuals across the nation.

Joining Aruna in securing Paralympic quota places for their respective countries are Palesha Goverdhan of Nepal and Allain Ganapin of the Philippines. Palesha earned her spot in the women’s 57 kg category, while Allain qualified in the men’s -80 kg division, marking their second Paralympic appearances.

Unfortunately, Allain Ganapin was unable to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games due to a positive COVID-19 test. However, he now looks forward to making his Olympic debut in Paris, bolstered by his qualification at the Asian Qualifiers.

The Asian Qualifiers witnessed seven countries securing Olympic quotas for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, with Thailand emerging as the top performer, claiming three berths.

In addition to Aruna Tanwar, Muskan and A Linciya represented India in the women’s weight divisions, while Sadham Hussain competed in the men’s category. Their participation underscores India’s commitment to para-sports and the nation’s efforts to promote inclusivity and excellence in athletic endeavors.

Aruna Tanwar’s remarkable journey exemplifies resilience, determination, and unwavering spirit, inspiring a generation of para-athletes to pursue their dreams and defy all odds on the path to success. Her qualification for the 2024 Paralympic Games is a testament to her exceptional talent and relentless pursuit of excellence on the global stage.
