Indian Navy Prepares for Humanitarian Response as Cyclone Remal Approaches

In anticipation of Cyclone Remal’s impending landfall, the Indian Navy has initiated preparatory actions, following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), to mount a credible Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) response. The cyclone is expected to cross the coast on the night of May 26-27, 2024. Naval Headquarters is closely monitoring the situation, with the Eastern Naval Command undertaking comprehensive preparatory measures.

Cyclone Remal, predicted to intensify into a severe cyclone, is forecasted to make landfall between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh. In readiness for the cyclone’s impact, the Indian Navy has positioned two ships equipped with HADR and medical supplies for immediate deployment, ensuring the safety and welfare of the affected populace.

Additionally, Indian Naval aviation assets, including Sea King and Chetak helicopters and Dornier aircraft, are on standby for rapid response. Specialized diving teams with necessary equipment have been stationed in Kolkata to provide prompt assistance, while additional diving teams in Visakhapatnam are prepared for quick deployment if required.

Two Flood Relief Teams (FRTs) with HADR and medical supplies are being positioned in Kolkata. Furthermore, two FRTs each from Visakhapatnam and Chilka are ready and on standby for deployment at short notice.
