New Delhi: In a swift and coordinated operation, the Indian Navy intercepted two Sri Lankan-flagged fishing vessels in the Arabian Sea, seizing approximately 500 kilograms of narcotics, identified as crystal methamphetamine. The operation was carried out in close collaboration with the Sri Lankan Navy, reaffirming the strong partnership between the two nations in combating maritime threats.
The operation was initiated following intelligence shared by the Sri Lankan Navy about suspected narcotics smuggling in the region. Acting on this information, the Indian Navy mobilized its assets, including Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft and Remotely Piloted Aircraft, under the guidance of the Information Fusion Centre (Indian Ocean Region) in Gurugram.
Two suspect vessels were identified through continuous aerial surveillance. An Indian naval ship was dispatched to intercept the boats, supported by the aerial assets. Over two days, November 24 and 25, Indian Navy boarding teams conducted thorough searches of the vessels, resulting in the seizure of the narcotics haul. To strengthen the operation, an additional Indian Navy ship was deployed to ensure the success of the anti-narcotics mission.
The seized narcotics and the crew aboard the vessels are being handed over to Sri Lankan authorities for further legal proceedings.
This joint operation highlights the effectiveness of regional collaboration in addressing maritime security challenges, particularly the menace of drug trafficking in the Indian Ocean Region.
