Indian Navy and IOCL Join Forces to Test Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus, Advancing Green Transportation

New Delhi: In a landmark initiative aligned with the Government of India’s green initiative and the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Indian Navy and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) have launched a pioneering project to test a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus. This collaboration marks a significant step toward the nation’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus, provided by IOCL to the Indian Navy, will undergo rigorous trials and performance testing. This effort represents a crucial stride towards adopting sustainable transportation solutions within the Armed Forces and showcases the potential of hydrogen as a clean, eco-friendly fuel source.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) facilitating this initiative was signed by Vice Admiral Deepak Kapoor, Controller of Logistics, Indian Navy, and Dr. Kannan Chandrasekaran, Executive Director of IOCL. The signing ceremony was attended by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, and Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of IOCL.

The MoU outlines that IOCL will provide the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus to the Indian Navy for trial and operational purposes. This collaboration aims to assess the bus’s performance, durability, and operational reliability for potential use in public transit applications.

The operation of this hydrogen-powered bus will enable a comprehensive evaluation of its capabilities and effectiveness in real-world conditions. It symbolizes a shared commitment to innovative solutions that tackle climate change and enhance energy security. By incorporating hydrogen fuel cell technology, both IOCL and the Indian Navy are leading the way in reducing carbon footprints and improving air quality, aligning with national environmental goals.
