Indian Coast Guard Rescues 14 Crew Members from Grounded Vessel off Alibaug Coast

Alibaug, Maharashtra: In a daring rescue operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully evacuated 14 Indian crew members from the grounded bulk carrier JSW Raigad off the coast of Alibaug. The operation was conducted around 0930 hrs on 26 July 2024, following a distress call received by the ICG Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Mumbai at 1327 hours on 25 July 2024.

The 122-meter vessel, carrying 14 crew members, ran aground on reefs approximately 1 nautical mile from Alibaug. The ship reported anchor dragging, flooding in the engine room, and a loss of control amidst extreme sea conditions along the Maharashtra coast. Given the challenging conditions and the presence of reefs, airlifting the crew was deemed the only feasible rescue method.

The ICG launched the rescue operation in the early hours of 26 July 2024. Despite adverse weather, a Coast Guard helicopter managed to evacuate all 14 crew members safely. The crew was brought to Alibaug beach without any reported injuries.

ICG Station Murud Janjira is coordinating with local authorities to provide medical aid and support to the mariners. The situation is being closely monitored to ensure the safety of the vessel and the surrounding environment.
