New Delhi: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG), in partnership with AIIMS New Delhi and with the support of the Union Territory (UT) administration, organized a two-day medical camp from April 29th to 30th, 2024, in the remote islands of Kavaratti and Androth in UT Lakshadweep. The medical camp aimed to provide essential healthcare services to the island residents and enhance the medical infrastructure in these remote areas.
Approximately 1,500 citizens from each island benefited from the medical camp, which offered free medical consultations and distribution of essential medicines. The initiative was part of the ongoing efforts by the Indian Coast Guard to extend medical assistance to remote and underserved communities across the country.
Dr. M Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, led a team of 15 specialist doctors specializing in various fields such as Gynecology, Pediatrics, Neurology, Dermatology, and Orthopedics. The medical team provided expert consultations and focused on addressing the healthcare needs of the island residents.
In addition to providing medical consultations, the camp also included sessions on basic life support (BLS) conducted by the medical professionals. These sessions aimed to enhance the skills of local medical professionals and improve the standards of medical care available in the islands.
The inaugural ceremony of the medical camp was graced by Dr. M Srinivas, Inspector General Bhisham Sharma (Commander Coast Guard Region – West), Surgeon Commodore Diviya Gautam, VSM (Principal Director – Medical Services, CGHQ), and Avanish Kumar, IAS (Health Secretary, UT administration). The presence of dignitaries underscored the collaborative efforts between government agencies and healthcare institutions to address the healthcare needs of remote communities.
The medical camp received positive feedback from the residents of Kavaratti and Androth, highlighting the significance of such initiatives in improving healthcare access in remote areas. The Indian Coast Guard remains committed to continuing its efforts to support community health and well-being across the country.
