Wayanad, Kerala: In the aftermath of the devastating landslide that recently struck Wayanad, Kerala, the Indian Air Force (IAF) swiftly initiated rescue and relief operations on the early morning of July 30, 2024. Coordinating efforts with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state administration, the IAF has been instrumental in providing critical aid and support.
IAF transport aircraft have played a pivotal role in airlifting essential supplies and conducting evacuation operations. The C-17 aircraft has transported 53 metric tons of vital supplies, including a Bailey bridge, dog squads, medical aid, and other essential rescue equipment. Additionally, An-32 and C-130 aircraft are being utilized to ferry relief materials and personnel. These combined efforts have facilitated the transportation of over 200 people, including rescue teams and displaced residents, to and from the disaster-stricken zone. Despite challenging weather conditions restricting flight operations, the IAF continues to find opportunities to carry out Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions.
The IAF has deployed a diverse fleet of helicopters for the rescue operations. Mi-17 and Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) have been inducted to undertake HADR missions. Despite widespread adverse weather conditions, IAF aircraft have been actively evacuating stranded individuals to the nearest medical facilities and safe zones, and delivering essential supplies until the late evening of July 31, 2024. These helicopters have successfully airlifted a significant number of people from the affected areas, ensuring their safe and immediate transportation.
