Indian Air Force Commemorates 25 Years of Kargil Victory with ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas Rajat Jayanti’ Celebration

Sarsawa: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is celebrating ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas Rajat Jayanti’ at Air Force Station Sarsawa from July 12 to July 26, 2024, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Kargil War victory. This event honors the bravery and sacrifice of the air warriors who played a crucial role in Operation Safed Sagar during the Kargil War of 1999.

The Kargil War, a significant milestone in the history of military aviation, showcased the IAF’s ability to overcome the unique operational challenges posed by the steep gradients and high altitudes of the battlefield. The IAF executed around 5,000 strike missions, 350 reconnaissance and ELINT missions, and approximately 800 escort flights. Additionally, over 2,000 helicopter sorties were flown for casualty evacuations and air transport operations.

A highlight of the commemoration is the homage paid to 152 Helicopter Unit, ‘The Mighty Armour,’ of Air Force Station Sarsawa. On May 28, 1999, Sqn Ldr R Pundir, Flt Lt S Muhilan, Sgt PVNR Prasad, and Sgt RK Sahu of 152 HU were tasked to fly a ‘Nubra’ formation for a live strike against enemy positions at Tololing. Tragically, their helicopter was hit by an enemy Stinger Missile, leading to the loss of four lives. Their extraordinary courage was posthumously honored with the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry), ensuring their names are forever etched in the annals of IAF history.

On July 13, 2024, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, alongside senior dignitaries, families of the fallen heroes, veterans, and serving IAF officers, laid a wreath at the Station War Memorial. This tribute honored all air warriors who laid down their lives in service to the nation. The Chief of the Air Staff also interacted with and felicitated the next-of-kin of the fallen heroes.

The event featured a spectacular air show, including displays by the Akash Ganga Team and aerial performances by Jaguar, Su-30 MKI, and Rafale fighter aircraft. A poignant “Missing Man formation” was flown by Mi-17 V5 helicopters in memory of the fallen heroes. Additionally, there was a static display of IAF helicopters, including Mi-17 V5, Cheetah, and Chinook, along with performances by the Air Warrior Drill Team and the Air Force Band.
