India Women’s Badminton Team Advances to Semi-finals at Badminton Asia Team Championships 2024; Confirms first ever medal at BATC
Shah Alam: The Indian women’s badminton team has etched their names in history by securing a spot in the semi-finals of the Badminton Asia Team Championships 2024 and confirming a medal from this tournament. Led by the formidable PV Sindhu, India displayed a stellar performance, defeating Hong Kong China 3-0 in the quarter-finals held in Shah Alam, Malaysia.
Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu led from the front, clinching a hard-fought victory against Lo Sin Yan Happy with a scoreline of 21-7, 16-21, 21-12. The Indian contingent continued their dominance as Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa secured a convincing win in the doubles match, beating Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam with a score of 21-10, 21-14. Ashmita Chaliha sealed the victory with a stellar performance against Yeung Sum Yee, winning 21-12, 21-13.
This remarkable achievement ensures that the Indian women’s team will secure their first-ever medal in the history of the Badminton Asia Team Championships. The semi-final clash against Japan awaits them, presenting an opportunity to compete for a coveted gold medal. The Indian women’s team has also secured a direct berth in the 2024 Uber Cup to be held in Chengdu, the People’s Republic of China, in April-May.
While the women’s team revels in their historic success, the Indian men’s team faced a tough challenge against Japan in the quarter-finals. Despite a spirited performance, the men’s team bowed out of the competition with a 3-2 loss against Japan.
