India Takes a Bold Step Toward Sustainable Energy Transition with New Centre of Excellence

New Delhi: In a significant move to accelerate India’s energy transition, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) have joined forces to establish a Centre of Excellence for Energy Transition (CoEET). This landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at a ceremony in Hyderabad, in the presence of Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, and A. Revanth Reddy, Chief Minister of Telangana. Senior officials from BEE, TERI, and the Telangana government also attended the event.

Manohar Lal praised the initiative, calling it a “bold and transformative” step that demonstrates India’s commitment to achieving sustainable development goals. He emphasized that the Centre would serve as a catalyst for the country’s clean energy adoption, which would not only support India’s transition to a low-carbon economy but also position the country as a global leader in energy transition. He added, “This partnership between BEE and TERI sets a benchmark for future collaborations in the energy sector.”

The CoEET, located at TERI’s Institute of Energy Transition (IoET) in Hyderabad, is envisioned as a world-class hub for research, innovation, and capacity-building in energy transition technologies and policies. This collaboration marks a crucial advancement in India’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and adopt low-carbon technologies across industries.

With a focus on collaborative research and technological development, the Centre will explore solutions for emission reductions in key sectors, including industry, MSMEs, transport, mining, and power. It will also drive innovation in energy-efficient technologies, such as motors, advanced boilers, HVAC systems, smart manufacturing, and waste heat recovery systems. Additionally, the Centre will contribute to shaping policy recommendations on building codes, energy performance standards, appliance labeling, and circular economy practices, while integrating cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and real-time energy monitoring.

A key goal of the Centre will be to enhance energy efficiency across power generation, transmission, and distribution systems, minimizing energy losses and strengthening India’s energy security. The Centre will also play a pivotal role in fostering national and international partnerships to address the challenges posed by the energy transition, while aligning its work with global sustainability goals.

TERI’s Institute of Energy Transition will oversee the operational management of the Centre, while a board comprising representatives from TERI, BEE, and the Ministry of Power will govern its activities. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has pledged financial support to ensure the Centre’s establishment and smooth functioning, while TERI will leverage its infrastructure in Hyderabad to drive operational activities.

This collaboration between government bodies and research institutions exemplifies the potential of partnerships in addressing global climate challenges. By advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and building capacity, the Centre of Excellence for Energy Transition is poised to play a transformative role in India’s sustainable future.
