Raipur: The Department of Posts, Government of India, has released a Commemorative Postage Stamp in honor of Mata Karma, a revered saint, social reformer, and devoted follower of Lord Krishna, on the occasion of her 1009th birth anniversary. The event, held in Raipur, was graced by Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Vishnu Deo Sai, along with Tokhan Sahu, Union Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs, Members of the Legislative Assembly, and esteemed members of the Akhil Bhartiya Tailik Mahasabha.
Mata Karma, known for her unwavering devotion and selfless service, is deeply connected to the Puri Jagannath Temple, where she is believed to have initiated the sacred tradition of offering khichdi to Lord Krishna. According to legend, upon reaching Puri, she prepared khichdi as an offering, which was accepted by the deity. This tradition became an integral part of the temple’s rituals and continues to be followed to this day. The newly released commemorative stamp beautifully depicts Mata Karma presenting khichdi to Lord Krishna, with the Jagannath Temple in the background, symbolizing her lasting spiritual and cultural contributions.
Recognized for her contributions to social harmony, women’s empowerment, and religious devotion, Mata Karma remains an enduring inspiration. Her life’s work emphasized unity, equality, and the fight against social evils like untouchability and conservatism. The issuance of this commemorative stamp by India Post is a tribute to her lasting legacy and a step toward preserving her contributions for future generations.
The stamp and associated philatelic items, including the First Day Cover (FDC) and Information Brochure, are now available at Philately Bureaus across India and online at www.epostoffice.gov.in. This initiative highlights the Government of India’s commitment to honoring great historical figures who have shaped India’s spiritual and social landscape.
