India into WC final, wins semi-final against Kiwis by 70 runs

Mumbai: In a thrilling encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India stamped their authority on the World Cup stage, securing a resounding 70-run victory over New Zealand in the first semifinal of the World Cup.

Batting first India set a target of 398 with a loss of three wickets. The New Zealand gave a brilliant chase and were bowled out for 327.

India and New Zealand both opted to go unchanged in the semi-final clash. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill provided a robust start for India, showcasing their prowess against New Zealand’s lead pacers.

With this victory, India has earned a coveted spot in the World Cup final, setting the India stamped their authority on the World Cup stage, stage for an exciting culmination to the tournament.

Bowling Brilliance: India’s victory was set in motion by a stellar bowling performance, led by pacer Shami, who claimed an impressive 7-57. Shami’s early breakthroughs, including a crucial two wickets in three deliveries when New Zealand was at 220-2, disrupted the Kiwi batting lineup.

Mitchell’s Heroics: Despite the formidable bowling attack, Daryl Mitchell fought valiantly for New Zealand, scoring an impressive 134 off 119 balls. His resilient innings, however, wasn’t enough to counter India’s dominant display.

Record-Breaking Century: Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper, etched his name in history by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar with his 50th ODI century. This remarkable feat makes Kohli the second Indian batter to achieve a World Cup century against New Zealand, following in the footsteps of Sunil Gavaskar.

Kohli’s Milestones: In addition to his century, Virat Kohli notched up his 6th half-century in the ICC World Cup 2023. With an eye on breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record, Kohli aims to become the first batter to achieve 50 ODI centuries.
