India Inaugurates First Green Hydrogen Plant in Stainless Steel Sector

New Delhi:  Union Minister for Steel and Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, inaugurated India’s first Green Hydrogen Plant in the Stainless Steel Sector today. The event marked a significant stride in India’s commitment to a sustainable and eco-friendly future. The plant, located at Jindal Stainless Limited in Hisar, was unveiled with the presence of esteemed officials, including Secretary, Ministry of Steel Nagendra Nath Sinha, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless Limited,  Abhyuday Jindal, and Founder of Hygenco, Amit Bansal.

During the inauguration, Minister Scindia underscored India’s dedication to responsible economic progress post-COVID, emphasizing the global environmental goals set by the nation. He highlighted India’s rich environmental history, now being rejuvenated through modern strategies like the Panchamrit and Mission LiFE, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to development that prioritizes both nature and human prosperity.

“The government encourages companies, citizens, and state governments to focus on ‘green growth’ and ‘green jobs’ to achieve the target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2070,” the Union Minister asserted.

Minister Scindia also commended India’s strides in the steel sector, transitioning from a net importer to a net exporter and aspiring to become the world’s largest producer of crude steel. He emphasized the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), a crucial initiative launched last year with a significant budget allocation, aiming to position India as a global hub for the production, usage, and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives. The mission is supporting pilot projects in the steel sector with a substantial budget until FY 2029-30.

The Minister acknowledged the additional outlay for infrastructure development in the recent Interim Union Budget, showcasing the government’s commitment to sustainability solutions and infrastructure spending.

In praising Hygenco and Jindal Stainless for commissioning India’s first long-term off-take green hydrogen plant, Minister Scindia affirmed that the project aligns seamlessly with the government’s vision for a cleaner and sustainable future. He urged industry stakeholders to adopt clean technologies actively, participating in India’s transformative journey towards a greener economy and fostering a conscientious industrial landscape.

Highlighting the government’s proactive approach, Minister Scindia announced robust national green policies, 13 task forces dedicated to various aspects of green steel production, and the implementation of the Steel Scrap Recycling Policy to enhance domestically generated scrap availability.

The world’s first off-grid Green Hydrogen plant for the stainless steel industry, this project is also the first Green Hydrogen plant with rooftop and floating solar. The state-of-the-art facility aims to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 2,700 Metric Tonnes per annum and 54,000 tons of CO2 emissions over the next two decades, marking a monumental step towards a sustainable future for India’s steel industry. Minister Scindia concluded by stating that the next era of growth belongs to India and, within India, to the steel industry.
