India Edge Past Germany 1-0 in FIH Hockey Pro League Clash

Bhubaneswar, February 24: The Indian Women’s Hockey Team secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Germany in the ongoing FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 at the Kalinga Stadium on Saturday. Deepika’s decisive goal in the 12th minute ensured redemption for India, who climbed to seventh place on the points table with the win.

From the outset, India displayed a disciplined defensive structure while pressing high to counter Germany’s possession-heavy approach. Their attacking intent paid off in the 12th minute when they won a penalty corner—Deepika stepped up and executed a powerful strike, beating goalkeeper Finja Starck to give India an early lead. Moments later, Vaishnavi Phalke created another scoring opportunity, setting up Sunelita Toppo, but the attempt narrowly missed the target.

The second quarter saw intense, end-to-end action as India pushed forward to extend their lead. The German defense struggled to contain India’s attacking waves, with Deepika weaving through defenders before threading a pass to Sharmila Devi in the 25th minute. However, Sharmila’s shot went straight into the goalkeeper’s pads. Germany responded swiftly, winning a penalty corner in the 26th minute, but Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia made a crucial save to deny Lena Micheel’s powerful drive.

After halftime, India resumed their aggressive play, earning a penalty corner in the 31st minute. Deepika once again aimed for goal, but Germany’s defense stood firm. Despite Germany enjoying more possession in the third quarter, India remained in control, restricting their opponents’ chances. Germany won back-to-back penalty corners in the 38th minute, but the Indian defense successfully neutralized both threats.

The final quarter was a test of India’s defensive resilience. An early penalty corner for Germany was thwarted as Sunelita Toppo bravely blocked Stine Kurz’s strike. In the 47th minute, Germany’s Sophia Schwabe fired a powerful shot from close range, but goalkeeper Bichu Devi produced a stunning save, denying Lisa Nolte’s rebound attempt moments later.

As the match neared its conclusion, Germany increased their attacking intensity, stringing passes together in search of an equalizer. However, India’s backline remained steadfast, preventing any breakthroughs and sealing a well-deserved victory.

India will return to action on February 25 when they face the Netherlands at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
