India beats Bangladesh in Penalty Shootout to Defend SAFF U19 Crown

Yupia: In a heart-pounding finale at the Golden Jubilee Stadium, India U19s showcased remarkable grit and composure to defeat Bangladesh 4-3 in a penalty shootout, clinching their second consecutive SAFF U19 Championship title. The game had ended 1-1 after regulation time, before the young Indian side held their nerve in the tie-breaker.

The contest began with fireworks, as India’s captain Singamayum Shami stunned the crowd with a sublime free-kick in just the second minute, giving his team an early lead. Bangladesh, however, regrouped and found their rhythm in the second half, equalising through Md Joy Ahamed in the 61st minute to push the game into a dramatic shootout.

The penalties were a rollercoaster. India faltered early when Rohen Singh’s shot was saved, handing the advantage to Bangladesh. But the momentum shifted again when Bangladesh skipper Nazmul Huda Faysal fired his shot over the bar. Indian keeper Suraj Singh Aheibam then stepped up heroically, diving left to block Salahuddin Sahed’s effort and swing the match back in India’s favour.

With the title on the line, captain Shami calmly slotted in the final penalty, sealing victory and sparking jubilant celebrations from the Indian bench.

India’s early dominance was clear. Shami’s stunning free-kick from over 30 yards out was not only bold but precise, curling over the wall and into the net despite a touch from Bangladesh goalkeeper Md Ismail Hossain Mahin. India pressed hard in the first half, with Omang Dodum threatening a second goal after a dazzling solo run, but Mahin denied him with a crucial stop.

Bangladesh, initially rattled, tightened their game. They closed down India’s passing lanes and slowly began to assert themselves, particularly through set-pieces. Their persistence paid off with a chaotic corner that led to Joy Ahamed’s equaliser—India’s first concession in the entire tournament.

From then on, the match turned into a physical midfield battle. Both sides searched for a winner, but defenses held firm and clear chances were scarce. With the full-time whistle, it all came down to composure from the spot.

India showed why they are champions—responding to adversity, staying composed, and delivering under pressure. Captain Shami’s performance, bookended by a spectacular goal and the winning penalty, stood out as a symbol of leadership and excellence.
