India and Thailand Conduct Inaugural Bilateral Maritime Exercise

New Delhi: In a historic move aimed at strengthening regional maritime security, the Indian Navy (IN) and the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) successfully conducted their maiden Bilateral Maritime Exercise from December 20 to 23, 2023. This significant engagement underscores the growing bilateral relations and operational synergy between the two maritime neighbors.

The inaugural edition of the exercise, named ‘Ex-Ayutthaya,’ witnessed the participation of indigenously built Indian Naval ships Kulish and IN LCU 56 alongside His Thai Majesty’s Ship (HTMS) Prachuap Khiri Khan from the RTN. The exercise marked a pivotal moment in enhancing interoperability between the two navies.

During the maiden Bilateral Maritime Exercise, participating units engaged in a series of surface and anti-air exercises, including weapon firing, seamanship evolutions, and tactical maneuvers. This initiative signifies a progressive increase in exercise complexity, demonstrating the commitment of both navies to bolstering their operational capabilities.

In conjunction with the bilateral exercise, the 36th edition of the India-Thailand Coordinated Patrol (Indo-Thai CORPAT) was also conducted. Maritime Patrol Aircraft from both navies actively participated in the Sea Phase, showcasing a holistic approach to maritime security and collaboration.

The choice of the name ‘Ex-Ayutthaya’ holds cultural and historical significance, representing the two oldest cities, Ayodhya in India and Ayutthaya in Thailand. Translating to ‘The Invincible One’ or ‘Undefeatable,’ the name embodies the deep-rooted historic legacies and rich cultural ties shared between the two nations.

This joint endeavor aligns with the Indian Navy’s commitment to the Government of India’s vision of SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region). The exercise has further solidified the close and friendly relationship between the Indian Navy and the Royal Thai Navy, contributing to the overall maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.
