India and ITU Sign Letter of Intent for Collaborative PhD Fellowship in Telecom

Geneva: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, Government of India, and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) in Geneva, Switzerland, to initiate discussions on a collaborative PhD fellowship scheme in telecommunications and emerging technologies. This initiative aims to enhance India’s contributions to global telecom research and standards by fostering stronger ties between Indian academia and the ITU.

The LoI signing followed a meeting between Secretary (Telecom), DoT, Dr. Neeraj Mittal, and ITU Secretary-General Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, along with other key officials. Dr. Mittal is on an official visit to Geneva to reinforce India’s global digital leadership and deepen international engagements in the telecommunications sector.

Strengthening India’s Role in Global Telecom Research

India’s rapidly growing telecom sector, the second largest globally, necessitates continuous innovation. The ITU, a UN specialized agency, plays a crucial role in shaping global ICT standards. Through this collaboration, DoT seeks to align Indian research with ITU priorities, amplifying India’s voice in global telecommunications, particularly for the benefit of developing nations.

DoT will coordinate with ITU through a designated focal point, identifying and supporting participating universities, providing feedback on research topics, granting fellowships to PhD scholars, and facilitating their engagement with ITU, including study visits. Scholars will be supervised by a government-nominated member on their university’s advisory committee.
