India and France to Strengthen Naval Cooperation with VARUNA 2025

The 23rd edition of the bilateral naval exercise VARUNA is set to take place from March 19 to 22, 2025, marking another milestone in the enduring maritime partnership between India and France. Since its inception in 2001, the exercise has evolved into a key pillar of naval cooperation, reflecting both nations’ commitment to enhancing interoperability and operational synergy at sea.

This year’s edition will feature an impressive display of maritime capabilities, with the participation of aircraft carriers INS Vikrant and FS Charles de Gaulle, along with their fighter aircraft, destroyers, frigates, and an Indian Scorpene-class submarine. The involvement of such a formidable fleet highlights the deepening military cooperation between the two navies and their focus on maintaining security in the Indo-Pacific region.

The exercise will include advanced air defence drills and fighter combat manoeuvres, with Indian MiG-29K and French Rafale-M aircraft engaging in mock air-to-air combat to refine tactical and operational capabilities. Anti-submarine warfare exercises will enhance underwater domain awareness, while surface warfare operations will see both navies executing synchronised manoeuvres and engagements. Maritime patrol aircraft will bolster situational awareness, and replenishment-at-sea drills will strengthen logistical coordination, ensuring sustained naval operations.

As the two navies engage in complex maritime operations, VARUNA 2025 underscores their shared vision of maintaining a free, open, and secure maritime environment. The exercise facilitates exchange of best practices, mutual trust, and the ability to operate seamlessly in high-intensity naval scenarios.

India and France continue to reaffirm their strategic maritime partnership, with VARUNA serving as a powerful demonstration of their commitment to upholding peace, stability, and security in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
