India and France Partner to Develop Yuga Yugeen Bharat National Museum

New Delhi: The Ministry of Culture has announced a landmark partnership with France Museums Développement (FMD) to develop the Yuga Yugeen Bharat National Museum (YYBNM) into a world-class cultural institution. This ambitious project, an integral part of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project, will span approximately 1,55,000 square meters across the iconic North and South Blocks in New Delhi.

The Yuga Yugeen Bharat National Museum, envisioned as a celebration of India’s unbroken civilizational history, was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the International Museum Expo in May 2023. It was further highlighted during the inauguration of Bharat Mandapam in July 2023. This collaboration aims to bring together India’s rich heritage and France’s renowned expertise in museum development to create a space that honors the country’s cultural legacy while embracing modern narratives.

As part of this strategic partnership, India and France will collaborate on a comprehensive feasibility study. This includes museum case studies, interpretive planning, and building programming. France’s extensive experience in museum management, demonstrated through iconic institutions like the Grand Louvre, will be instrumental in shaping the development of YYBNM.

The approach for the Yuga Yugeen Bharat National Museum will involve Adaptive Reuse, ensuring the preservation of the historic North and South Blocks’ architectural heritage while transforming them into a vibrant cultural space. This mirrors France’s successful “Grands Projets” initiative, where government buildings were converted into cultural landmarks such as the Louvre, Grand Palais, and Hôtel de la Marine.

Union Minister for Culture & Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, emphasized the vision behind the project, “This landmark partnership with France will transform the Yuga Yugeen Bharat National Museum into a global beacon of India’s rich cultural heritage. It will serve as a testament to India’s vibrant and diverse legacy, fostering inclusivity and amplifying the voices of our communities. This iconic institution will bridge the past, present, and future, offering a powerful narrative of Modern India while inspiring generations to come.”

The development of the Yuga Yugeen Bharat National Museum will not only honor India’s timeless heritage but will also focus on sustainable and adaptive reuse, ensuring efficient use of space while preserving the country’s historical traditions.

This collaboration reaffirms India’s commitment to fostering cultural exchange and preserving its heritage in partnership with global experts. The recent visit of Prime Minister Modi to Paris in 2023 further strengthened this partnership, resulting in a renewed Letter of Intent outlining specific technical collaborations for the YYBNM project.
