India and Australia Launch 3rd Edition of Joint Military Exercise AUSTRAHIND in Pune

Pune: The third edition of Exercise AUSTRAHIND, a joint military drill between India and Australia, commenced today at the Foreign Training Node in Pune, Maharashtra. Scheduled to run from November 8 to November 21, 2024, this annual exercise alternates between the two countries, with the last edition held in Australia in December 2023.

This year, the Indian contingent of 140 personnel primarily consists of soldiers from the DOGRA Regiment, supported by 14 personnel from the Indian Air Force. The Australian Army is represented by 120 personnel from the 13th Light Horse Regiment, 10th Brigade of the 2nd Division. The collaboration underscores the commitment of both nations to fostering a robust defense partnership and enhancing interoperability.

Exercise AUSTRAHIND focuses on joint sub-conventional operations in semi-urban environments with a semi-desert terrain, aligning with Chapter VII of the UN mandate. Its core objective is to promote military cooperation by refining joint tactics, improving operational coordination, and building mutual trust.

The exercise is divided into two key phases: combat conditioning and tactical training, followed by a validation phase. Throughout the training, personnel will rehearse strategic drills, such as counter-terrorism tactics involving territory capture, establishing a Joint Operations Centre, and conducting search-and-destroy missions. The use of advanced technology, such as drones and counter-drone measures, and specialized tactics like Special Heli-Borne Operations, will also be a focus.

By fostering an exchange of best practices in tactical operations, Exercise AUSTRAHIND not only strengthens India-Australia military cooperation but also helps build camaraderie among the soldiers, contributing to the broader Indo-Pacific security framework.
