India Achieves Major Breakthrough in Hypersonic Technology with Successful Scramjet Engine Test
Hyderabad: The Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), a Hyderabad-based unit of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has achieved a significant milestone in hypersonic technology with the successful ground test of an Active Cooled Scramjet Combustor. This 120-second test, a first in India, underscores the nation’s growing capabilities in developing advanced hypersonic missiles.
Hypersonic missiles, capable of traveling at speeds exceeding Mach 5 (over 5,400 km/hr), represent the next generation of weaponry, offering the ability to bypass traditional air defense systems and deliver precise, high-impact strikes. Nations like the USA, Russia, India, and China are at the forefront of hypersonic technology development, with scramjets (Supersonic Combustion Ramjets) being a critical component.
Scramjet engines use air-breathing technology to sustain combustion at supersonic speeds, eliminating the need for moving parts. Successfully igniting and maintaining combustion in such conditions—compared to “keeping a candle lit in a hurricane”—is a remarkable technical feat.
The DRDL ground test demonstrated several breakthroughs:
- Ignition and Stable Combustion: Achieved using innovative flame stabilization techniques to hold a continuous flame at airspeeds exceeding 1.5 km/s.
- Endothermic Scramjet Fuel: Developed indigenously for the first time in India by DRDL and industry, this fuel provides superior cooling and ignition properties, meeting stringent requirements on an industrial scale.
- Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC): A state-of-the-art ceramic TBC, capable of withstanding temperatures beyond the melting point of steel, was jointly developed with the Department of Science & Technology (DST).
Advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools were instrumental in simulating and optimizing the scramjet engine’s performance.
The indigenous advancements in hypersonic technology place India in an elite group of nations equipped with cutting-edge capabilities in defense. These achievements pave the way for developing next-generation hypersonic missiles with enhanced performance and advanced thermal management systems.
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh praised DRDO and its industry partners for their success, calling the ground test a “crucial milestone” in hypersonic missile development. Similarly, DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat commended the DRDL team for their innovative efforts and groundbreaking results.
