IFFI 2024: ‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know’ Crew Shares Insights at Press Conference

Goa: At the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), the crew of the acclaimed short film Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know captivated the media with a thought-provoking press conference. The filmmakers, led by director Chidananda S. Naik, delved into the creative process behind this poetic and visually stunning short film, which has garnered international acclaim.

Director Chidananda S. Naik explained that Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know is deeply influenced by Indian folklore and his own childhood experiences. He described the film as “a poetic expression of real-life experience,” one that intertwines the rich beauty of traditional stories with personal recollections. “It’s about exploring cultural themes and creating a narrative that reflects my roots,” Naik added, offering a glimpse into the deeply emotional and cultural essence of the film.

When asked about his journey as a filmmaker, Chidananda emphasized the importance of short films in nurturing new talent. “Short films are an invaluable platform for young filmmakers. They provide a chance to experiment, explore different styles, and push creative boundaries,” he remarked. He also highlighted how short films offer an opportunity to balance time, space, and cost while ensuring the story adds meaningful value to its audience.

The film’s production process, according to production designer Pranav Khot, involved overcoming significant challenges due to limited resources. Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know, produced by FTII, Pune, required the team to think outside the box. “We had to work creatively within constrained guidelines and resources, but it was an inspiring process that pushed us to innovate,” Khot shared, reflecting on the collaborative effort that went into bringing the story to life.

Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know has made a significant mark on the global stage. The film has officially qualified for the 97th Academy Awards in the Live Action Short Film category, marking a milestone in its journey. This recognition follows the film’s first-place win at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival’s La Cinef Selection, where it gained widespread praise for its poignant narrative and cultural depth.

The Kannada-language film, inspired by Indian folk stories and traditions, continues to receive acclaim for its innovative storytelling and emotional resonance. The press conference at IFFI highlighted not only the film’s success but also its potential to inspire new generations of filmmakers.

As the team behind Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know prepares for more milestones, the film stands as a testament to the power of storytelling, the richness of Indian culture, and the potential of short films to make a lasting impact on the global cinematic landscape.
