Hockey India Announces Inaugural National Women’s Hockey League

New Delhi: Hockey India, on Tuesday, introduced a groundbreaking initiative, the National Women’s Hockey League 2024 – 2025, signaling a significant leap forward in the nation’s sporting landscape. The league, designed to showcase talent and elevate the stature of women’s hockey, is structured into two phases, with the inaugural phase scheduled to kick off in Ranchi, Jharkhand, from 30th April to 9th May 2024.

The Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium, renowned for hosting prestigious events like the FIH Olympic Qualifiers and the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy, will be the venue for all matches during the opening phase.

The National Women’s Hockey League is India’s maiden domestic women’s league of its kind, promising a thrilling display of talent and skill. Aimed at providing a platform for emerging athletes, the league will witness intense competition among the top state teams that secured their spots by finishing in the top eight at the 14th Hockey India Senior Women’s National Championships.

The inaugural season will feature the top eight state teams, including Hockey Haryana, Hockey Maharashtra, Hockey Jharkhand, and others, reflecting their exceptional performance and dedication to the sport.

In a significant move, the league will also welcome young talent, with players under the age of 21 eligible to participate. This inclusive approach underscores Hockey India’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering grassroots development.

The National Women’s Hockey League holds immense promise in not only raising the standard of women’s hockey but also inspiring the next generation of athletes nationwide. Through this initiative, Hockey India reaffirms its dedication to promoting gender equality in sports and creating pathways for women to excel in hockey.

Moreover, the league will serve as a crucial scouting platform for the national team, offering selectors the opportunity to identify and groom talent for future international competitions.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the league, Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey remarked, “The National Women’s Hockey League marks a watershed moment for Indian hockey, particularly for our women athletes. This league is a testament to our unwavering commitment to women’s sports and will serve as a catalyst for the growth and development of women’s hockey in the country.”

Secretary-General of Hockey India, Shri Bhola Nath Singh, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “The National Women’s Hockey League marks a watershed moment for Indian hockey, particularly for our women players. This league is a testament to our unwavering commitment to women’s sports and will catalyze the growth and development of women’s hockey in the country.”
