High-Level Policy Dialogue Highlights Interlinkage of Climate Change, Hunger, and Poverty

New York: Amit Ghosh, Additional Secretary (Social Justice and Empowerment), addressed the high-level policy dialogue on “Deciphering the Interlinkage of Climate Change, Hunger, and Poverty,” an official side event of the High-level Political Forum 2024. The event, organized by the India Water Foundation and supported by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Japan Development Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Global Alliance for a Sustainable Planet (GASP), brought together key stakeholders to discuss the pressing challenges at the intersection of climate action, poverty reduction, and hunger alleviation.

The dialogue aimed to assess the climate impacts on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 (No Poverty) and 2 (Zero Hunger), providing a comprehensive analysis of these impacts. The event sought to create a unified approach to tackle climate change, reduce poverty, and alleviate hunger, presenting a vital opportunity to drive effective implementation for transformational change. The discussions focused on identifying lessons and best practices from across the globe that can inspire accelerated climate action while simultaneously addressing poverty and hunger.

In his address, Ghosh commended Dr. Arvind Kumar, President of the India Water Foundation, for his vision, leadership, and relentless efforts in emphasizing the global commitment to addressing challenges that transcend borders and demographics. He also conveyed gratitude on behalf of Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), who acknowledged Dr. Kumar and the India Water Foundation for convening this critical dialogue and highlighting the intrinsic connections between the SDGs.
