High Alert Along Indo-Nepal Border as Unrest Spills Over From Kathmandu

New Delhi: India has ramped up security along its border with Nepal after two days of violent protests in Kathmandu triggered fears of cross-border trouble. Central agencies warned that anti-social elements could exploit the chaos in Nepal to incite violence in adjoining Indian states, prompting an immediate alert to border security forces.

Police forces in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, along with the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), have been placed on maximum alert. Round-the-clock patrolling, intensified checks at entry points, and deployment of additional personnel have been ordered to prevent any law and order breach along the porous frontier.

In Uttarakhand’s Champawat, which connects to Nepal’s Mahendranagar, security has been tightened after the Nepal Army imposed a curfew. In Pithoragarh’s Dharchula, locals expressed anxiety over relatives stranded on the other side as officials boosted surveillance across the border.

Bihar’s Madhubani district also witnessed stepped-up measures, with SSB jawans manning border posts and thorough checking of cross-border movement. Superintendent of Police Yogendra Kumar said, “All border police stations are on high alert. People crossing into India are being verified, and strict efforts are underway to ensure no miscreants slip through.”

Uttar Pradesh has intensified vigilance across seven border districts — Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar, and Maharajganj. DGP Rajeev Krishna said 73 checkpoints had been placed under heightened watch. In Lakhimpur Kheri, SSP Sankalp Sharma confirmed joint patrolling with BSF and continuous monitoring of developments across the border.

Similar precautions have been enforced in West Bengal, where the Panitanki border in Darjeeling district has been placed on high alert, with forces maintaining round-the-clock surveillance.

Officials said the measures were precautionary but necessary, given the volatile situation in Nepal and the potential for unrest to spill across the border.
