Grand Finale of ‘SAMAGAM’ Celebrates Elderly Empowerment and Inclusivity in New Delhi

New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) today hosted the Grand Finale of ‘SAMAGAM’ in New Delhi, marking the successful culmination of a month-long series of initiatives focused on enhancing the dignity, respect, and welfare of senior citizens across India. The event highlighted achievements and showcased a short film capturing the vibrant celebrations held throughout October for the International Day of Older Persons, 2024.

Prominent dignitaries, including Union Ministers of State Ramdas Athawale and B.L. Verma, and NITI Aayog Member Dr. Vinod Kumar Paul, were present, underscoring the Government’s dedication to supporting India’s ageing population. In his address, Shri Ramdas Athawale emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between policies and their implementation, particularly for elderly citizens in both urban and rural communities. He praised initiatives that promote financial security and healthcare, remarking that a progressive nation ensures its elderly are respected and well-cared for.

B.L. Verma, in his keynote address, recognized senior citizens’ vital role in shaping India’s heritage and values. He highlighted government initiatives undertaken this month, from health camps and pension schemes to skill development and intergenerational bonding activities, which have successfully engaged communities across the country. He praised the inter-ministerial collaboration and stakeholder engagement that made the celebration impactful.

Dr. Vinod Kumar Paul addressed the evolving needs of senior citizens, emphasizing policy innovation and service delivery enhancements. He outlined plans for future government initiatives, such as expanding digital literacy programs tailored for older adults, improving geriatric healthcare, and creating more age-friendly public spaces. He also highlighted the importance of mental health services to address isolation and loneliness among the elderly.

The month-long observance began on October 1, when Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar led a pledge ceremony at the Air Force Bal Bharati School in New Delhi. Events included a walkathon, where students joined their grandparents, and Rashtriya Vayoshree Camps at 51 locations, distributing assistive devices to enhance seniors’ mobility. The October 24 ‘Aradhana’ cultural event, held at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, celebrated active ageing with performances by senior artists, reinforcing messages of intergenerational solidarity and respect for traditional Indian caregiving practices.

Nationwide programs were held at Regional Resource Training Centres, old age homes, and associated NGOs. Activities included a quiz on the MyGov platform to promote awareness of senior rights and welfare among younger citizens and a pledge inviting people to commit to the dignity and well-being of elders in their communities. Letters to various Ministries and State governments encouraged the organization of programs centered on family values and intergenerational connections.

The Grand Finale ‘SAMAGAM’ was not only a celebration but a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to senior citizens’ welfare, as Monali Dhakate, Joint Secretary (MoSJE), expressed gratitude to all contributors. The Ministry pledged continued efforts to ensure that senior citizens in India live with dignity, happiness, and security. Looking ahead, MoSJE aims to enhance healthcare access, boost financial support, and promote digital literacy among seniors, while encouraging citizens, especially the youth, to actively engage in building a society that cherishes and respects its elderly.
