Government Initiates Research on Digital Consumption Patterns and Impulse Control

New Delhi:  In a bid to address the growing concerns surrounding disruptive impulse control behavioral patterns associated with digital consumption, the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA), Government of India, has joined hands with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) Bangalore. The collaborative effort aims to undertake comprehensive research, with a primary focus on online gaming addiction, to identify vulnerabilities and propose a responsible digital consumption model.

A meeting was convened on March 4, 2024, under the Chairmanship of Shri Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs. The session brought together key stakeholders, including Shri Anupam Mishra, Joint Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, Dr. Pratima Murthy, Director of NIMHANS, and Dr. Manoj Sharma, Professor of Clinical Psychology at NIMHANS.

Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh highlighted the detrimental effects of online gaming addiction, emphasizing its role in social isolation and the neglect of real-life responsibilities. He underscored the urgency of understanding and addressing the compulsive gaming behavior that negatively impacts mental and physical health. The objective of the study is to formulate a responsible digital consumption model applicable not only to online gaming but also scalable to other digital platforms like social media.

The study will delve into the underlying factors contributing to excessive digital content consumption. With this understanding, the researchers aim to create a framework for predicting, alerting, and intervening with appropriate coping mechanisms. The overarching goal is to guide consumers towards responsible technology use, minimizing both economic and physical risks.

Dr. Pratima Murthy, Director of NIMHANS, outlined the collaborative efforts required for data collection, analysis based on demographic segments such as age groups and socio-economic strata, and the identification of existing interventions and coping mechanisms. The project envisions formulating mechanisms to promote healthy digital habits and prevent the progression to excessive consumption.

The Director expressed the critical need for such a project in the current digital landscape, emphasizing its potential to provide valuable insights for framing consumer protection guidelines in online gaming. Additionally, the findings are expected to offer guidance to the industry, promoting responsible behavior to ensure the optimal use of technology.

The research project marks a significant step in addressing the emerging challenges posed by digital consumption patterns. As technology continues to play a central role in daily life, understanding and mitigating the risks associated with excessive consumption is crucial for the well-being of individuals and the broader society. The collaboration between DoCA and NIMHANS reflects the government’s commitment to creating a balanced and responsible digital environment for all citizens.
