Government Extends Ban on Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) for Five More Years

New Delhi: The Indian government has declared the ‘Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI)’ as an ‘Unlawful Association’ for an additional period of five years under Section 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) 1967. The previous ban on SIMI was imposed through Gazette Notification Number S.O. 564(E) on January 31, 2019.

The decision to extend the ban comes as SIMI is found to be persistently involved in activities that contribute to terrorism, disrupt peace, and challenge communal harmony in the country. These actions are deemed prejudicial to the sovereignty, security, and integrity of India.

SIMI has a history of facing numerous criminal cases, with its members implicated under various sections of the law, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The government’s move to extend the ban reflects its commitment to curbing organizations that pose threats to national security and public order.
