Forest Minister Orders Inquiry into Unnatural Elephant Deaths in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Forest Minister Ganesh Ram SingKhuntia has called for an extensive investigation into the unnatural deaths of elephants in Odisha. The directive came following reports that nearly 50 elephants have died under concerning circumstances this year alone, sparking widespread alarm and media attention.

In a letter addressed to Additional Chief Secretary of Forest, Environment & Climate Change, Satyabrat Sahu, Minister SingKhuntia expressed his deep concern over the frequency of these incidents, describing them as “very alarming.” He emphasized the urgent need for enhanced protective measures and greater vigilance to prevent further casualties among the state’s elephant population.

“The government has been proactive in implementing measures such as the deployment of Gaja Sathis and Rapid Action Teams,” said Minister SingKhuntia. “However, the current situation demands increased care and dedication from forest officials to ensure a safe environment with statutory protective measures for the elephants.”

The minister highlighted that stricter oversight and accountability are necessary to address potential lapses. “Priority must be given to this issue, and errant officers must not be allowed to escape accountability. Responsibilities will be fixed for those found negligent or inefficient in safeguarding the elephants’ lives,” he asserted.

Minister SingKhuntia ordered a division-wise detailed investigation into the incidents and directed that stringent action be taken against any officials found responsible for failures. The report on the findings is to be submitted within a month.
