
New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated three special souvenir coins during the 19th Foundation Day celebrations of the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL). The event, conducted in hybrid mode, showcased the launch of a colored coin featuring endangered animals of India, specifically the Greater One-Horned Rhino, a bi-metallic clad coin commemorating the Enlightenment of Buddha, and a colored coin dedicated to Ram Lalla and Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir.
Sitharaman commended SPMCIL for its production of various security products, including banknotes, security paper, postal stamps, passports, and medallions. She expressed appreciation for SPMCIL’s thoughtful initiative in creating a ‘Visually Impaired Friendly’ Coin Series. The Finance Minister also acknowledged SPMCIL’s progressive ventures, such as the production of e-Passports with a Track and Trace system, enhancing security and providing convenient information.
Highlighting the global recognition of SPMCIL’s souvenir products, Sitharaman emphasized that these items are presented by the Indian government to dignitaries from other nations at international forums.
The Finance Minister further lauded the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects undertaken by SPMCIL, particularly in aspirational districts and remote areas. She encouraged SPMCIL’s employees and board members to stay abreast of technological advancements and proactively respond to the evolving needs of this specialized sector. The souvenir coins are now available for purchase on the SPMCIL website.
