FIH Pro League: India Aim for Consistency Against Ireland in Crucial Matches

Bhubaneswar: The Indian Men’s Hockey Team will be looking to find consistency and climb the points table as they gear up to face Ireland in their next set of matches in the FIH Pro League 2024-25. After a mixed start to the tournament, India will aim to build momentum with strong performances against an Ireland side desperate for its first win.

India’s campaign began with a 3-1 loss to Spain, but they bounced back with a solid 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture. However, their winning rhythm was disrupted by a 4-1 defeat against Germany. The team managed to recover in the second leg against the Germans, clinching a narrow 1-0 victory, bolstered by the return of Captain Harmanpreet Singh and Vice Captain Hardik Singh, both of whom had missed the earlier match due to injury.

Currently sitting seventh in the standings with six points from four matches, India will need to address their penalty corner struggles, having failed to convert any of their 14 penalty corner opportunities so far. Their inability to capitalize on these crucial moments has been a significant concern.

Ireland, on the other hand, have endured a difficult start to the tournament, sitting at the bottom of the table with just one point from four games. They have lost three matches in regulation time and one in a shootout, making the upcoming fixtures a must-win situation for them.

History favors India in this matchup, with seven wins out of their last nine encounters against Ireland since 2013. Ireland has managed only one victory, while one match ended in a draw.

Speaking ahead of the crucial clashes, India’s captain Harmanpreet Singh emphasized the importance of consistency. “These upcoming matches are vital for us as we look to build momentum in the FIH Pro League. Every game is an opportunity to improve and gather crucial points. Ireland may be lower in the standings, but they are a determined team that can spring surprises, so we cannot afford to take them lightly.”

The captain also acknowledged India’s struggles with penalty corners, stating, “We’ve been creating opportunities, but our conversion rate needs improvement. That will be a major focus area in these games.”

With both teams eager to prove a point, the upcoming fixtures promise to be intense as India chase much-needed stability while Ireland fight to stay in contention.
