EPFO Data Highlights Robust Growth in Organized Workforce, Signaling Youth Employment Surge

New Delhi: The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has released its provisional payroll data for January 2024, revealing a substantial increase in net members, with a notable emphasis on youth employment and gender diversity.

According to the data, EPFO added a remarkable 16.02 lakh net members in January 2024. Among these additions, approximately 8.08 lakh were new enrollments, indicating a vibrant influx of individuals into the organized workforce. Remarkably, the data underscores the dominance of the 18-25 age group, constituting a significant 56.41% of the total new members. This trend suggests that a considerable portion of those joining the organized workforce are young, primarily first-time job seekers, reflecting the evolving dynamics of employment in the country.

A noteworthy aspect of the data is the significant number of members who exited and subsequently rejoined EPFO, totaling approximately 12.17 lakh individuals. These members opted to transfer their accumulations instead of seeking final settlement, emphasizing their commitment to long-term financial well-being and social security.

Gender-wise analysis further reveals encouraging trends, with around 2.05 lakh new female members joining EPFO in January 2024. Additionally, the net female member addition stood at approximately 3.03 lakh, underscoring a broader shift towards a more inclusive and diverse workforce.

Industry-wise comparison demonstrates growth in establishments engaged in various sectors, including financing, manufacturing, marketing, servicing, computer usage, and healthcare. Notably, around 40.71% of the total net membership additions are from expert services, comprising manpower suppliers, contractors, security services, and miscellaneous activities, indicating a diverse range of employment opportunities within the organized sector.

It’s important to note that the provided payroll data is provisional, as EPFO’s data generation is an ongoing process. Updates to employee records are continuous, resulting in monthly revisions of previous data. Since April 2018, EPFO has been releasing monthly payroll data covering the period from September 2017 onwards. The data includes counts of new members joining EPFO through Aadhaar-validated Universal Account Numbers (UAN), existing members exiting coverage, and those who exited but subsequently rejoined, contributing to the calculation of net monthly payroll.
