Election Commission Updates Status of Actions Under MCC, Reaffirms Commitment to Transparency

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has announced the update of actions taken under the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), based on complaints from political parties, after two months of its operation. This decision reflects the Commission’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all stakeholders in the electoral arena.

Building upon its earlier initiative of providing MCC updates after the first month of its implementation, the Commission has chosen to disclose certain details of the actions taken. This step aims to address any misgivings and reinforce the public’s trust in the electoral process.

CEC Shri Rajiv Kumar, along with ECs Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, leads the Commission in monitoring pending cases of alleged MCC violations on a daily basis. Actions are taken in a time-bound manner and with top priority, underscoring the Commission’s proactive approach towards maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.

Many of the actions taken over the past two months carry far-reaching implications in ensuring the cleanliness and fairness of the campaign space not just in the short term, but also in the long term. The Commission emphasizes that these efforts go beyond mere episodic interventions, aiming instead to systematically uphold the principles of democracy and ethical conduct in elections.

The Commission also urges leaders of political parties, particularly those who serve as star campaigners, to set exemplary standards of campaign discourse. With several phases of elections remaining, the onus is on these leaders to steer clear of divisive rhetoric and uphold the social harmony and unity of the nation.
