DRDO and Indian Navy Successfully Test Indigenous Multi-Influence Ground Mine

Visakhapatnam: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have successfully conducted combat firing trials of the indigenously developed Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM). The trial, carried out with reduced explosives, marks a key milestone in the nation’s efforts to strengthen maritime defense using homegrown technology.

Developed by Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Pune, and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), Chandigarh, the MIGM is a cutting-edge underwater mine designed to detect and neutralize modern stealth submarines and warships.

The system, now validated for operational deployment, is poised for induction into the Indian Navy, according to Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO. He noted that the successful validation marks a critical step in achieving self-reliance in advanced underwater mine warfare systems.

Production of the MIGM is being carried out by Bharat Dynamics Limited, Visakhapatnam, and Apollo Microsystems Limited, Hyderabad, underlining the growing synergy between India’s public and private defense sectors.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Navy, and the industry partners for the successful test. He emphasized that the induction of the MIGM would significantly enhance India’s underwater defense posture and help maintain maritime superiority in the Indian Ocean Region.

The MIGM represents a new generation of smart naval mines that can respond to multiple signatures—such as magnetic, acoustic, and pressure influences—offering a sophisticated deterrent against intrusion by enemy vessels.
