Dr. Jitendra Singh Emphasizes Science Communication’s Role in National Progress at Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan National Awards 2024

New Delhi: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, and other key portfolios, Dr. Jitendra Singh, highlighted the critical role of effective science communication in translating innovations into societal benefits at the Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan National Awards for Excellence 2024. The awards ceremony, held in New Delhi, celebrated the contributions of individuals excelling in various fields, including journalism, science reporting, and cultural initiatives.

Honouring Excellence Across Fields

The event recognized exceptional contributions with awards named after the late Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan, a pioneering science journalist in India. Among the notable recipients:

  • P. Narayanan: Excellence in Journalism
  • Umendra Dutt: Excellence in Science Reporting
  • Sathyanarayana Raju: Excellence in Art and Culture
  • Jeejo John Puthezhath: Excellence in Medical Malpractices Investigation
  • Maneka Sanjay Gandhi: Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan Foundation Dattopant Thengadi Seva Samman 2024

Other distinguished honorees included H.H. Rev. Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis, G. Rajamohan, Hareesh Kumar P., Nazeer V. Koyakutty, and Ajith Nayar, who were celebrated for their contributions to public service and diaspora excellence.

Dr. Jitendra Singh underscored the importance of specialized science journalism in fostering public engagement with scientific advancements. “In a rapidly evolving world, translating innovations into societal benefits requires effective communication,” he noted. He emphasized the need for India to cultivate specialized science journalists who can break down complex topics and debunk myths, making scientific knowledge accessible to all.

Drawing attention to Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan’s legacy, he stated, “She was a trailblazer in science reporting, bringing technical topics to the forefront of public discourse during a time when such initiatives were rare in India.”

Dr. Singh highlighted India’s significant achievements in science and technology under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Initiatives such as advancements in quantum technology, the bio-economy policy, and biotechnology are paving the way for the country’s emergence as a global leader.

He also spotlighted the Lavender Start-Up movement, known as the “Purple Revolution,” which empowers young entrepreneurs through lavender cultivation. “This initiative is a testament to the transformative power of science in achieving economic independence,” he remarked.

The Minister encouraged institutions like the Mangalam Foundation to introduce training programs for aspiring science communicators. “Workshops, short-term courses, and initiatives in science journalism can carry forward the vision of Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan and ensure a well-informed society,” he suggested.

Dr. Singh concluded by emphasizing the government’s dedication to fostering innovation and scientific inquiry. “The Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan National Award is not just an honour; it is a call to action for all of us to promote science literacy and bridge the gap between advancements and public understanding,” he said.
