Digvijaya Singh Rules Out Lok Sabha Election, Cites Ongoing Rajya Sabha Term

Bhopal: Amidst speculation surrounding the participation of Congress leaders from Madhya Pradesh in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh has put an end to rumours by stating that he has no intention of contesting.

Singh clarified that he won’t be vying for a Lok Sabha seat, pointing out that his term in the Rajya Sabha has more than two years remaining. Elected as a Member of Parliament in the Upper House in June 2020, Singh’s tenure is slated to conclude in June 2026.

Addressing the press in his home district Rajgarh on Sunday, Singh stated, “The question of contesting the elections does not arise because I am a member of Rajya Sabha and still have over two years.”

While there has been speculation about the Congress considering him as a candidate from Rajgarh, Singh firmly ruled out the possibility. He has been actively engaging with party workers in Rajgarh, Raghogarh, and Khilchipur, which are part of the Rajgarh Lok Sabha constituency.

Sources within the Congress suggested that it’s unlikely for Digvijaya Singh to be granted another term as a Rajya Sabha MP, hinting at the party’s preference for him to contest in the Lok Sabha elections.

In 2019, Singh contested from Bhopal Lok Sabha seat but faced defeat against BJP’s Pragya Singh Thakur with a margin of 3.65 lakh votes.

Rajgarh Lok Sabha seat holds significance for Singh, being his hometown and where he previously represented in 1984 and 1991. However, Singh emphasized that the Congress party would decide the candidate for the Rajgarh Lok Sabha constituency.
