Development Commissioner Anu Garg Reviews Flood Management and Reservoir Operations

Bhubaneswar: Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Water Resources, Anu Garg, IAS, held a comprehensive review on flood management with senior engineers of the department on July 29, 2024. The meeting focused on the current flood scenario resulting from the release of water from the Hirakud reservoir and its downstream impact.

During the review, Garg assessed the situation following the opening of 20 gates at the Hirakud reservoir. She emphasized maintaining the reservoir level as advised by the special technical committee. Additionally, she reviewed the status of all major and medium irrigation projects across the state, considering the IMD forecast for possible rain.

Key directives issued by Garg included:

  • Monitoring Water Release: Ensuring meticulous monitoring of water release from all reservoirs.
  • Communication with District Administration: Dam authorities must inform district administrations personally via email, WhatsApp, or phone well before the release of flood water and adhere to the SOP.
  • Vigilance of Field Officers: Senior officers were instructed to ensure that field-level officers remain vigilant during the flood scenario.

On July 30, 2024,  Garg conducted a follow-up review of the flood scenario with senior engineers of the Water Resources Department. All officials were asked to stay alert and proactive during the floods.

The Department of Water Resources is committed to managing the flood situation effectively and ensuring the safety of residents. Under the leadership of Smt. Anu Garg, the department continues to implement strategies and maintain coordination to address the challenges posed by the floods.
