DEPwD Signs 72 MoUs with Private Sector to Empower Persons with Disabilities

New Delhi: In a significant step towards enhancing the social, educational, and economic empowerment of persons with disabilities, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) has signed 72 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with private institutions and start-ups. The signing ceremony was presided over by Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Virendra Kumar, with Minister of State in the Ministry, B.L. Verma, also in attendance.

The event, held today in New Delhi, marks a pivotal moment in the department’s ongoing efforts to foster inclusivity through innovative technology and collaboration. The MoUs are part of a broader initiative to integrate cutting-edge solutions and advancements from the private sector into the department’s programs, aiming to address the diverse needs of persons with disabilities.

As part of this initiative, the DEPwD organized six Purple Talks sessions in April and May 2024. These workshops engaged with Indian start-ups, companies, and academic institutions that have developed technology-based products and programs designed to enhance the lives of persons with disabilities. Over 100 organizations participated, showcasing innovations in areas such as physical and intellectual disabilities, visual and hearing impairments, education, skill development, and employment.

Dr. Virendra Kumar highlighted the role of DEPwD under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in advancing the empowerment of persons with disabilities. “Under the Prime Minister’s vision of a self-reliant India, many institutions are now manufacturing affordable devices domestically to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities,” he said. He emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration between government and social organizations to achieve inclusive progress. “The cooperation of various social organizations is crucial for the empowerment and employment of persons with disabilities,” he added.

Minister of State B.L. Verma reiterated the commitment demonstrated by the MoUs, stating that they reflect a dedication to providing opportunities for persons with disabilities. He praised the resilience and potential of individuals with disabilities, noting that these agreements will offer them valuable platforms for growth and contribution.

Secretary (DEPwD) Rajesh Aggarwal observed a positive shift in societal attitudes towards persons with disabilities. He commended the private institutions involved for their efforts in providing employment opportunities and emphasized that the government’s policies are being effectively scaled up through collaboration with private organizations.

The MoUs signed today will facilitate the development of innovative, technology-based products and services aimed at empowering families of persons with disabilities, raising awareness, preventing and treating conditions such as clubfoot, and building the capacity of trainers and teachers. Notable participants in the program included Zomato, IIT Madras, EnAble India, Neo Motion, Cure India, Assam Rifles, and Radio Udaan.
