DEPwD Hosts Nationwide Awareness Programs on Prosthetics and Orthotics in Observance of International Prosthetics and Orthotics Day
New Delhi: Following the celebration of International Prosthetics and Orthotics Day (IPOD) on November 5, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) has launched a series of nationwide awareness programs. These initiatives, hosted by National Institutes and Composite Regional Centers (CRCs) across India, aim to highlight the importance of prosthetic and orthotic devices in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with limb loss or physical disabilities.
The awareness programs are part of the Government of India’s ongoing efforts to support the Divyangjan community and raise awareness about the transformative impact of assistive devices on mobility and independence. Prosthetic and orthotic services play a vital role in improving mobility, functionality, and the overall well-being of individuals with physical challenges.
“Person-centered healthcare is at the heart of these services, and it is essential that individuals, families, and communities become active participants and beneficiaries in this trusted healthcare system,” said a DEPwD spokesperson. The awareness campaigns were designed to ensure that the Divyangjan community gains greater access to resources and information that can make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Key activities held across the country include:
- Awareness Rally and Educational Activities by NILD: Students from the National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities (NILD) organized a rally, street plays, and educational sessions to underscore the importance of prosthetics and orthotics in promoting mobility and inclusion. The event aimed to engage the public and raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

- Public Awareness Program by CRC Gorakhpur: CRC Gorakhpur organized a mass awareness event, during which motorized tricycles were distributed to numerous Divyangjan. This initiative was aimed at improving ease of movement and fostering self-reliance.
Additional programs were also organized by various other National Institutes and CRCs, helping spread awareness across the country about the life-changing potential of prosthetics and orthotics for Divyangjan.
DEPwD continues to reaffirm its commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities, supporting their aspirations for independence, and fostering inclusion. By expanding access to prosthetic and orthotic services and encouraging a culture of inclusivity, the Government of India is striving to create a future where every individual can live with dignity and equal opportunities.
