Deepika Kumari Advances to Archery Quarterfinals; Bhajan Kaur Narrowly Misses Out

Paris: In a thrilling display of archery, India’s Deepika Kumari advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s archery event on Saturday, defeating Germany’s Michelle Kroppen in the 1/8 elimination round. Meanwhile, Bhajan Kaur’s spirited performance ended in a narrow 6-5 defeat against Indonesia’s Diananda Choirunisa.

Deepika Kumari emerged victorious with a score of 6-4 against Kroppen. She began the match with a 27-24 victory in the first set, securing two points. The second set ended in a 27-27 draw, resulting in a point for each archer. Deepika continued her strong performance by winning the third set 26-25, adding two more points to her tally.

Kroppen responded by winning the fourth set 29-27, earning two points and narrowing the gap. However, Deepika maintained her composure and held a two-point lead going into the final set. The fifth set concluded in another 27-27 tie, splitting the points. Deepika’s overall score of 6-4 secured her place in the quarterfinals.

In a parallel match, Bhajan Kaur faced a tough challenge from Indonesia’s Diananda Choirunisa. Despite a strong fight, Bhajan was edged out in a closely contested 6-5 encounter.

Choirunisa led 4-2 by the third set, winning the first set 29-28. Bhajan equalized with a 27-25 victory in the second set. However, Choirunisa regained the lead with a 28-26 win in the third set. The fourth set ended in a 28-28 draw, giving both archers a point and bringing the score to 5-3 in favor of Choirunisa.

The decisive fifth set saw another 27-27 draw, pushing the match to a shoot-off. Bhajan scored eight points against Choirunisa’s nine, resulting in a heartbreaking 5-6 loss in the 1/8 elimination round.

Despite Bhajan Kaur’s exit, Deepika Kumari’s advance to the quarterfinals provides a beacon of hope for India’s archery contingent. The nation eagerly anticipates more stellar performances in the ongoing competition.
