Bhubaneswar: Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary has achieved a major milestone in 2025–26, recording its highest-ever revenue of ₹6.02 crore and attracting nearly 1.4 lakh tourists, reaffirming its growing stature as one of India’s emerging wildlife and eco-tourism destinations.
The figures mark a sharp rise from the previous financial year (2024–25), when the destination generated ₹5.01 crore in revenue with around 85,000 visitors. Officials noted that the steady increase reflects both improved infrastructure and rising national and international interest in Odisha’s eco-tourism offerings.
Tourist footfall this year was evenly split, with around 50% visitors from Odisha and the remaining 50% from other parts of India and abroad, including countries such as Italy, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Finland, Ireland, Spain, and Brazil.
A key highlight of 2025–26 was the introduction of Odisha’s first forest-based homestay experience at Dhodrokusum Green Village, along with a unique 2-km birding trail, enhancing nature-based and community-driven tourism. These additions have further strengthened Debrigarh’s appeal among wildlife enthusiasts and eco-tourists.
Over the years, Debrigarh has evolved into a prominent wildlife destination, offering near-guaranteed sightings of species such as Indian bison (gaur), leopard, wild dog, sambar, chital, sloth bear, wild pig, and peacock, along with a wide variety of birds.
The sanctuary currently offers a wide range of eco-tourism facilities, including 25 accommodation units such as stargazing rooms with glass roofing and forest homestays, jungle and wildlife safaris with trained eco-guides, and cruises on the Hirakud Reservoir. Visitors can also explore island attractions like Bat Island, Cattle Island, and Sunset Island, along with experiences such as kayaking, cycling, trekking, wildlife photography tours, and guided stargazing.
Additional attractions include the Island Café, Govindpur Birds Village, Barabakhra Caves, and the Veer Surendra Sai Memorial, along with storytelling sessions and dedicated spaces for nature-based recreation.
Looking ahead, Debrigarh Ecotourism is set for further expansion in 2026–27, with plans to open 32 new cottages for night stays, including 10 additional homestays at Dhodrokusum Green Village. Upcoming attractions such as a canopy walk and enhanced safari and cruise services with new vehicles and boats are also in the pipeline.
Officials said the continued expansion aims to boost sustainable tourism while creating livelihood opportunities for local communities, positioning Debrigarh as a leading eco-tourism hub in the country.
