Bhubaneswar: Cyclonic Storm Dana is currently located 150 kilometers from the port city of Paradeep and is expected to make landfall between Bhitarakanika and Dhamara in Odisha later tonight. The storm is moving at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour and poses a significant threat to several districts in the state.
The affected areas include Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Cuttack, and Dhenkanal. A total of 2,163 villages across 64 blocks and 64 wards in 13 urban local bodies (ULBs) are forecasted to be impacted, with approximately 454,800 people expected to be affected by the cyclone.
As of now, the state government has evacuated 417,626 individuals to safety, providing them with cooked meals and shelter. A total of 7,284 shelters have been opened, with 5,209 currently operational and fully equipped to house those in need.
In a proactive response to the impending storm, authorities are distributing essential supplies, including 862 quintals of chuda (flattened rice) and 97 quintals of gura (jaggery), to affected communities. However, the ongoing heavy rainfall has adversely affected around 500 livestock in the region.
Health services are also being mobilized, with 213 medical teams and 120 veterinary teams deployed across the state to address health concerns and livestock welfare. Additionally, 3,654 pregnant women are being transferred to healthcare facilities and maternity homes, known locally as MAA Gruha, to ensure safe deliveries during the crisis.
A robust response framework has been established, with a total of 385 response teams deployed across the state. This includes 19 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, 51 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) teams, 95 Odisha Fire and Disaster Mitigation teams, and 220 fire service teams. The Rural Development Department has also mobilized 256 teams to clear and restore road access in the affected areas.
During a press briefing held at the Special Relief Commissioner’s office in Rajib Bhawan, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari confirmed these measures and emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the citizens. Special Relief Commissioner Deoranjan Kumar Singh and Principal Secretary of Rural Development and Information & Public Relations Department Sanjay Kumar Singh were also present to provide updates on the ongoing preparations and response efforts.
As Cyclone DANA approaches, authorities urge residents in the affected districts to stay vigilant and adhere to safety advisories to minimize risks and ensure their safety.
