Cricket Legend Mike Procter Passes Away at 77

Johannesburg: South Africa’s cricket fraternity mourns the loss of legendary cricketer Mike Procter, who breathed his last on Saturday due to complications arising from a heart surgery. He was 77.

Mike Procter, hailed as one of the greatest all-rounders of his era, leaves behind an extraordinary cricket legacy. His illustrious career encompassed 401 first-class games, where he amassed a remarkable 21,936 runs, featuring 48 centuries, and claimed 1,417 wickets with a stellar average of 19.53. Procter’s bowling prowess included an impressive tally of 70 five-wicket hauls.

Recognized as one of South Africa’s finest all-rounders, Procter’s impact on the game extended beyond his statistical achievements. His multifaceted skills as a fast bowler, proficient off-spinner, powerful middle-order batsman, and insightful captain have become part of the rich tapestry of South African cricket history.

Post-retirement, Procter continued his deep engagement with the sport in various capacities. He served as a national captain and coach, administrator, selector, commentator, and an elite ICC match referee. In his later years, he dedicated his time to coaching underprivileged children, leaving an indelible mark on the grassroots level.

The cricketing community mourns the loss of a true icon, remembering Mike Procter not only for his on-field brilliance but also for his enduring contributions to the growth and development of cricket in South Africa.
