Coal India Limited Receives Prestigious Green World Environment Award for CSR Excellence

London/New Delhi: Coal India Limited (CIL), under the Ministry of Coal, has been honored with the prestigious Green World Environment Award 2024 in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) category. The recognition, conferred by The Green Organization, celebrates CIL’s transformative Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojna, a program that has provided life-saving stem cell and bone marrow transplants (BMT) to over 600 Thalassemia patients. Additionally, CIL was bestowed the title of Green World Ambassador, reaffirming its role as a global leader in sustainability and social impact.

The award was presented at a ceremony held at The Orangery, Kensington Palace, London, on November 18, 2024. Vinay Ranjan, Director (Personnel/IR) of CIL, accepted the honor, describing it as a powerful motivator to continue working toward environmental preservation and a sustainable future.

Launched in 2017, the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojna marked a groundbreaking effort as the first CSR initiative by a public sector enterprise to focus on curative treatment for Thalassemia patients through BMT. Under the program, financial assistance of up to ₹10 lakh is provided for each procedure. Seventeen prominent hospitals across India are partners in delivering this vital treatment, which has brought hope to countless families.

CIL’s efforts extend beyond its core responsibility as India’s largest coal producer, reflecting its dedication to both social and environmental causes. The company plays a pivotal role in India’s energy sector, producing over 80% of the nation’s coal and fueling 70% of its coal-based power generation. This contribution accounts for 55% of India’s total power generation and meets 40% of the country’s primary commercial energy requirements.

In addition to its CSR achievements, CIL has implemented significant measures to enhance environmental sustainability. These include expanding green cover over mined-out areas, developing eco-parks and tourism hubs, and repurposing mine water to provide essential resources for millions in rural areas.

Receiving the award, Ranjan emphasized CIL’s ongoing commitment to balancing energy production with sustainable practices and social responsibility. He noted that the recognition from The Green Organization, a globally respected independent environmental group, highlights CIL’s leadership in advancing CSR and environmental stewardship.

The Ministry of Coal, which oversees coal and mineral mining policies, lauded CIL’s achievement as a milestone in aligning industrial goals with national and global priorities. The recognition underscores the company’s dedication to addressing critical social and environmental challenges while driving progress in India’s energy sector.

CIL’s receipt of the Green World Environment Award not only acknowledges its impact in the CSR domain but also sets a benchmark for corporate entities striving to make meaningful contributions toward sustainability and social welfare.
