Centre Unveils Stricter Guidelines for Professional Coaching Institutes Nationwide, students below 16 can’t be enrolled
New Delhi: In a bid to regulate private coaching centres offering professional courses, the Union Ministry of Education has released stringent guidelines, mandating the registration of all such centres across the country. According to the Guidelines for Registration and Regulation of Coaching Centre 2024, forwarded to chief secretaries in all states and Union territories, private coaching centres are now obligated to enroll students above the age of 16.
While some states already had regulations in place for coaching institutes, these national guidelines aim to address concerns arising from the proliferation of unregulated centres, charging excessive fees and contributing to heightened student stress, sometimes leading to tragic consequences such as suicides.
The move comes after a distressed parent approached the Supreme Court in November 2023, seeking regulations to prevent student suicides in Kota, Rajasthan, where a record 26 such deaths were reported.
The guidelines not only focus on age-related restrictions but also stress the importance of mental well-being for students. Acknowledging the intense competition and academic pressure, coaching centres are encouraged to conduct classes without unduly pressuring students. Furthermore, the guidelines emphasize the establishment of mechanisms for immediate intervention to support students facing distress and stressful situations.
Additionally, coaching institutes are urged to engage counsellors and experienced psychologists to provide psychotherapeutic services, addressing mental stress and depression among students. The overarching goal is to create a regulated and supportive environment within coaching institutes, fostering a balance between academic excellence and the mental health of students.
