CDS Gen Anil Chauhan Concludes Strategic Visit to Australia, Strengthens Defence Ties

New Delhi: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan successfully concluded his four-day visit to Australia, reinforcing the growing defence partnership between the two nations. The visit, from March 4 to March 7, highlighted India’s commitment to regional security, military cooperation, and strategic collaboration under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

During his visit, General Chauhan was given a ceremonial guard of honor at the Russell Offices of the Australian Defence Force. He held extensive discussions with Admiral David Johnston, Australia’s Chief of Defence Force, and the Chiefs of Staff Committee, focusing on strengthening military ties, particularly in maritime security, joint exercises, capacity building, and defence technology exchange. His visit also laid the groundwork for new bilateral defence initiatives aimed at enhancing operational synergy between the two nations.

The CDS also visited Headquarters Joint Operations Command (HQJOC), where he gained insights into Australia’s operational command structure and discussed potential avenues for enhanced joint military operations. Further engagements included visits to Forces Command Headquarters of the Australian Army and Fleet Headquarters of the Royal Australian Navy, emphasizing deeper coordination in maritime security and strategic operations in the Indo-Pacific region.

As part of India’s commitment to professional military training and education, General Chauhan visited the Australian Defence College (ADC), where he engaged with Rear Admiral James Lybrand, Commandant of ADC, to explore avenues for strengthening professional military education. Addressing senior officers at the Defence & Strategic Studies Course, he provided insights into strategic challenges in the Indo-Pacific and interacted with Indian officers undergoing training at the ADC, underscoring the role of bilateral military exchanges in fostering mutual understanding.

Furthering policy and strategic discussions, General Chauhan chaired a round-table at the Lowy Institute, Australia’s premier think tank, where he engaged with Air Chief Marshal (Retd) Sir Angus Houston, Dr. Michael Fullilove, and Sam Roggeveen. The discussions centered on India-Australia defence cooperation, multilateral security frameworks, and strategic convergence in the Indo-Pacific.

The CDS also received a detailed briefing on Advanced Navigation Systems, focusing on cutting-edge defence technologies enhancing battlefield awareness, precision targeting, and situational awareness in complex operational environments. He toured key Australian Defence Industry facilities, gaining firsthand insights into Australia’s advanced defence manufacturing, R&D, and technological innovations, further strengthening bilateral defence collaboration.
