CCL and NCL Sign MoUs to Provide Life-Saving Surgeries for Children with Congenital Heart Disease

New Delhi: On Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day, Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) and Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), subsidiaries of Coal India Ltd (CIL) under the Ministry of Coal, signed separate Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Sri Sathya Sai Health & Education Trust (SSSHET) to provide critical pediatric heart surgeries under the ‘Nanha Sa Dil’ initiative. The signing ceremony took place at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi, marking a major step in improving child healthcare through corporate social responsibility (CSR).

The MoUs were signed in the presence of Secretary (Coal), Vikram Dev Dutt, Additional Secretary, MoC, Rupinder Brar, DDG, MoC, Santosh, Dr. C. Sreenivas, Chairman, SSSHET, and other senior officials. SS Lal, GM (CSR), CCL, and Rajeev Ranjan, GM (CSR), NCL, signed on behalf of their respective companies, while Vivek Gour, Trustee, SSSHET, represented the trust.

‘Nanha Sa Dil’ is a unique CSR initiative by Coal India Limited in partnership with SSSHET, aimed at identifying and treating children suffering from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). Under the initiative:

• CCL will screen 45,000 children in Jharkhand, with 500 surgeries planned for those diagnosed with CHD.
• NCL will conduct 345 screening camps for 17,250 children, referring those in need to a diagnostic center at NCL Bina Hospital for Echo analysis and further treatment.

Since its launch on March 7, 2024, the Nanha Sa Dil project has already facilitated over 250 life-saving surgeries and is now expanding through CCL, NCL, and SECL to benefit children in multiple states.

Addressing the gathering, Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary, Ministry of Coal, applauded the initiative, stating,
“These MoUs will build long-term goodwill for Coal India and its subsidiaries. This initiative is not just about corporate responsibility—it is about saving lives and transforming society.”

CIL Chairman, PM Prasad, along with other senior officials, joined the event virtually, reiterating the company’s dedication to impactful CSR initiatives.

With over 2.40 lakh children born with CHD annually in India, only 5% undergo surgeries due to high costs. By committing to saving over 2,000 lives in the next three years, Coal India Limited is setting a historic milestone for any Public Sector Unit (PSU) in India.

Over the past three years, CIL and its subsidiaries have invested ₹1,673 crores in healthcare, education, and rural development, with 90% of CSR funds directed toward operational states. Through initiatives like ‘Nanha Sa Dil’, CIL is bridging the healthcare gap, offering hope to countless families, and reinforcing its role in nation-building beyond coal production.
