Kolkata: In a major step towards integrating traditional medicine with modern scientific research, the Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), Kolkata, under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the School of Natural Product Studies (SNPS), Jadavpur University. The collaboration aims to evaluate Vidangadi Lauham, a classical Ayurvedic formulation, for its effectiveness in diabetes management through experimental studies.
The MoU, signed at CARI Kolkata, formalizes a research initiative titled “Evaluation of Vidangadi Lauham, a Classical Ayurvedic Formulation in the Management of Diabetes in Experimental Animals.” This study seeks to build a strong scientific foundation for the use of Ayurvedic medicines in diabetes treatment by conducting biophysical characterisation and biological activity analysis of medicinal plants used in the formulation.
The research is expected to preserve and validate India’s rich medicinal plant heritage, ensuring the development of safe, high-quality, and effective Ayurvedic formulations for diabetes and its complications. Given the global rise in diabetes cases, this initiative could lead to natural, side-effect-free alternatives to conventional treatments, enhancing public health outcomes.
Additionally, the project underscores the need for a comprehensive database on the health benefits of medicinal plants, strengthening Ayurveda’s credibility in global healthcare. By integrating traditional knowledge with scientific validation, the study aims to promote Ayurvedic formulations as reliable and effective health solutions worldwide.
The MoU signing ceremony saw participation from senior officials of both institutions. Dr. G. Babu, Director, CARI Kolkata, led the delegation, accompanied by Dr. Anupam Mangal (Assistant Director, Pharmacognosy), Dr. Lalrin Puia (Research Officer, Pharmacology), Dr. Sharad D. Pawar (Assistant Director, Pharmacology), and Dr. Rahul Singh (Research Officer, AEP). Representing Jadavpur University, Prof. (Dr.) Pallab Kanti Halder, Director and Principal Investigator of the project, was also present.
