Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Bhitarkanika National Park continues to strengthen its status as a major habitat for saltwater crocodiles, with the latest census showing a rise of 32 crocodiles over the past year, reflecting sustained conservation efforts in the region.
The Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department on Monday announced that the annual estuarine crocodile census recorded a total of 1,858 crocodiles in and around Bhitarkanika National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. The figure marks an increase from 1,826 crocodiles counted during last year’s survey.
The census was conducted between January 8 and January 10, during which the Forest Department deployed 24 specialised teams across different ranges to ensure comprehensive coverage of river systems, creeks and adjoining habitats.
Confirming the findings, PCCF (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden Prem Kumar Jha said the annual estimation highlighted a consistent upward trend in the crocodile population, indicating favourable habitat conditions and effective protection measures.
Range-wise analysis revealed that the Kanika Wildlife Range accounted for the highest concentration, with 1,424 crocodiles recorded. Rajnagar Wildlife Range followed with 292 crocodiles, while Mahakalpada and Gahirmatha Wildlife Ranges reported 99 and 43 crocodiles respectively.
The census also documented a balanced age structure, comprising 353 adults, 167 sub-adults, 365 juveniles, 442 yearlings and 531 hatchlings, underscoring healthy breeding and long-term population stability at Bhitarkanika.
