Bhitarkanika National Park Reopens to Tourists After Seasonal Closure

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s famed Bhitarkanika National Park is set to welcome visitors once again from August 1, following a scheduled three-month closure to allow for the safe and undisturbed breeding of estuarine crocodiles.

The park had remained off-limits to tourists between May 1 and July 31 as part of the forest department’s conservation efforts. With the breeding period now over, preparations have been completed to reopen the sanctuary, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for nature enthusiasts.

Situated in Kendrapara district, Bhitarkanika is renowned for its thriving mangrove forests, rich biodiversity, and unique wildlife, including the elusive saltwater crocodile. It is also home to numerous bird species, deer, wild boars, and other exotic fauna.

Forest officials confirmed that pathways have been cleared, infrastructure has been checked, and staff have been deployed to assist tourists. “We’re fully prepared to host visitors and ensure that their experience in the park is both memorable and environmentally responsible,” said a senior official.

The park offers a variety of attractions including serene boat rides through mangrove-lined waterways, guided jungle treks, and opportunities for birdwatching and sky-gazing. The reopening marks a significant moment for both conservation and tourism in the region.

Authorities have urged tourists to follow park guidelines, avoid disturbing wildlife, and contribute to preserving the ecological balance of one of India’s most vital wetland ecosystems.
